Lionel Dury was born in 1997 and lives and works in Brussels.

Completing a master’s degree in drawing at La Cambre in 2021, Lionel won his year’s Coup de Coeur prize alongside two other prizewinners.

His practice choreographs several fields and several voices; between sculptural interventions, metaphysical concepts, or contemplative works inspired by science and philosophy. Lionel Dury’s productions reveal the rhythm and trajectories of our universe, both psychic and physical. Fragile and ephemeral, the networks of which we are a part are presented to the public, linking this world to our inner selves.

The artist draws on the expertise of physicists to create his works, researching themes and theories in the fields of quantum physics, fluid mechanics and spirituality.

When Lionel Dury talks about the real, he is talking about what is relative to each member of the body of matter. He refers to exploration beyond our first perception, questioning our certainties and dogmas, such as that of the number or the notion of unit of measurement. His work involves a back-and-forth between our certainties.

Using scientific theories such as turbulent systems and the notion of absolute zero, he develops a typography of our psyche. It feeds on fluctuations and movements. The artist establishes an epistemology based on the articulation of these and contemporary or more ancient myths.

Without requiring the viewer to actively learn this dry knowledge, Lionel Dury stages, through his sculptural works, a narrative profoundly linked to the exploration of our reality. Although infinitely impalpable, due to the very opacity of the registers from which they come, these invisible stories make up a nature of which we are a part. It’s a question of building a cosmogony in which we are the protagonists.

We are invited to become aware of a part of the universe present within our bodies. To immerse ourselves in a state of contemplation of what is happening at every moment, out of sight, to poetically rethink our way of seeing the world.
